Patron: St. Martha

Saint Martha of Bethany is remembered in the Gospels as a woman of generous service, practical leadership, and courageous faith. She appears alongside her siblings Mary and Lazarus in a household that welcomed Jesus with friendship and hospitality. In Luke's Gospel, Martha is busy with many tasks while Mary listens at the Lord's feet. Jesus gently invites Martha to focus on what is most necessary, a teaching often misunderstood as criticism of service. In truth, Martha's work is valued, but she is called to interior freedom so that service flows from attentive love rather than anxious burden. In the Gospel of John, Martha emerges as one of the strongest voices of faith before the Passion. After Lazarus dies, she goes out to meet Jesus and professes confidence in him even through grief. Her confession—recognizing Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God—is among the most profound declarations in the Gospel narrative. This scene reveals Martha not only as a worker but as a theologian of hope, able to trust Christ in the face of death. Christian tradition therefore honors Martha as a model for discipleship that unites contemplation and action. She teaches that domestic responsibilities, parish tasks, and practical service are holy when rooted in communion with Christ. She also embodies resilient faith: she speaks honestly to Jesus in sorrow and still entrusts her life to him. Her patronage is especially meaningful for families, caregivers, homemakers, and all who serve behind the scenes. For communities under Saint Martha's name, her witness is deeply pastoral. She encourages hospitality that is warm and dignified, ministry that is organized and compassionate, and prayer that sustains service. She reminds believers that the Church needs both active hands and listening hearts. In honoring Saint Martha, the parish affirms that everyday faithfulness—welcoming, feeding, accompanying, and believing—is a true path of holiness and a living proclamation of the Gospel.
