Patron: St. Anthony of Padua

Saint Anthony of Padua, born Fernando Martins in Lisbon in 1195, is one of the most loved saints in the Catholic tradition. He first entered religious life with the Augustinian Canons, where he devoted himself to Scripture and theological study. After the martyrdom of Franciscan missionaries in Morocco deeply moved him, he joined the Franciscans and took the name Anthony. His missionary dream was interrupted by illness, and Providence redirected him to Italy. There, his extraordinary knowledge of Scripture and his clarity in preaching quickly became known. Saint Francis himself entrusted Anthony with theological formation of the friars, a sign of great confidence in his wisdom and holiness. Anthony preached in simple, direct language, reaching both educated listeners and ordinary people. He called communities to repentance, justice, and mercy, and he defended the dignity of the poor. He is remembered not only as a gifted preacher but also as a pastor with a tender heart who reconciled sinners and encouraged the discouraged. He died near Padua in 1231 at only thirty-six years old and was canonized less than a year later. In 1946, he was declared a Doctor of the Church, recognizing the depth of his teaching. Many people know Saint Anthony as the patron for finding lost items, but this devotion points to something greater: he helps people seek what is spiritually lost as well—faith, peace, purpose, and reconciliation with God. His life unites prayer, study, preaching, and compassion for those in need. Communities that honor Saint Anthony are invited to love the Word of God, defend the vulnerable, and proclaim Christ with humility and joy. His witness reminds us that holiness is not reserved for a few; it grows wherever the Gospel is preached with truth, charity, and courage. His intercession continues to inspire families, catechists, and preachers to return to Scripture and to serve people with practical compassion.
